Tax Collectors and Sinners

“While Jesus sat at supper in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.” (Matthew 9:10 MEV)

“Then Levi made Him a great feast in his house. And there was a group of many tax collectors and others who sat down with them. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus answered them, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:29-32 MEV)

The Pharisees were following Jesus Christ around to all the places He went. With His every move, they looked for ways to criticise Him, not understanding His objective which was to save those who were lost.

Whoever they were, tax collectors, non-believers, Roman soldiers or centurions, the Lord Jesus would make sure He gave them an opportunity to see the ways of Heaven. That’s how He started and finished His mission on the cross, being crucified next
to two robbers. Before ascending to Heaven that is the mission He passed to us:

He said to them, “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved. But he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:15-16 MEV)

The Universal Church came into existence as God’s plan to reach the captive and blind, those who are sick and those who are lost without even knowing they are really lost. For this reason, we strive to reach everyone without prejudice, for our mission is to offer the world a chance to know who Jesus is.

When we sit with sinners, there will always be those (Pharisees) who will oppose it, just as happened with Jesus. But our Lord did so and we will always make the most of every opportunity to show Jesus Christ to those who are in prison, in the brothels, in slums, involved with drugs or in any activity that brings upon them suffering and pain. Now the question is: Are you making the most of every opportunity to save those who are lost, no matter who they are?

God bless you more and more
